The new ASM constitution is set to be voted on in a referendum by the student body in February. The culmination of our student government's effort toward "reform," the new constitution is a dangerous document that was constructed without the opportunity for meaningful student input.
As a result, a coalition of concerned groups and students are asking the student body to vote against the revised Constitution. The new document threatens the funding streams of student organizations - the bedrock of campus life - and creates a powerful presidential position closely tied with the administration.
Our current student government is far from perfect and must be made more accountable to students. But the new constitution goes about fixing these problems in the wrong way, and ultimately will only limit student control over campus life.
WE CANNOT ALLOW AN UNACCOUNTABLE GROUP OF ASM INSIDERS GET AWAY WITH THIS BLATANT VIOLATION OF STUDENT RIGHTS.
